A Theory of Everything

In mid 2004, just weeks after leaving the corporate world and while travelling in Thailand, I experienced my first epiphany. An epiphany, the way I define it, is a sudden, powerful, and often life-changing realisation that someone experiences in an otherwise ordinary moment. It is a flash of extreme inspiration in which a previously worrying concern suddenly makes perfect sense.

At the time, while riding a wave of intense emotion which is difficult to fully explain, I wrote How to Find the Purpose of Your Life. This was the first (extremely tentative) step on what I knew would become a journey of discovery.

Since then I’ve adopted The Triangular Theory of Consciousness - a phrase coined by Dr Ian Weinberg in ‘Quantum-determinism – an Integrative Model of Holistic Consciousness’. Published in Quantum Leap, Sygma Books, 1998. Continue reading

Oh, and before I forget, you really should read my Why I Blog post. It might numb the shock of some of the heretical things I say!

Proof

A forum member recently shared the Carl Sagan quote, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.”

This quote assumes an objective universe, which is a rather biased way of looking at reality — and not particularly accurate either. In my opinion Carl Sagan’s quote is misleading at best.

What is proof anyway?

Proof is an artifact of viewing reality through an objective lens. However, proof is not a facet of actual reality. Reality just is. It does not need to be proven. Reality is secure enough in its own existence that it doesn’t care whether some being proves or disproves what it is. If you think reality cares about proof, you could also say it derives a sick satisfaction from all the false proofs that have been tendered in its name over the last few millennia.

Instead of proof what we really want is truth. And a good first truth to accept is that it’s only the squishy, lens-peering beings that require proof, which is actually a subjective experience. Continue reading

How to Change the World

I’m always searching for tangible ways in which we as individuals can do something to change the world. This is not an easy task. Things are so bad that most people, when looking at the enormity of all the problems facing the world, feel depressed, overwhelmed, and apathetic. They often give up, because it appears impossible to make any meaningful difference in the world.

I had another profound epiphany last night, triggered by a number of ‘coincidences’ which have happened recently. I’m still thrashing out the details, which will be posted here soon. But back to answering the question of How to Change the World. Continue reading

Walsch

Walsch is an American author of the series Conversations with God. He was brought up as a Roman Catholic by a family who encouraged his quest for spiritual truth. He studied The Bible, the Rig Veda and the Upanishads. He says his books are not channelled, but rather that they are inspired by God and that they can help a person relate to Him from a modern perspective. The God in his books, for example, says that “there is nothing you have to do.” His vision expressed is of a New Spirituality: an expansion and unification of all present theologies; a refreshing of them, rendering all of our current sacred teachings even more relevant to our present day and time. He created Humanity’s Team as a spiritual movement whose purpose is to communicate and implement New Spirituality beliefs, particularly that we are all one with God and one with life, in a shared global state of being. Excellent messages in all of his books. Listed below are some of them.

Does God Exist?

“Imagine if there was a pill that would compel the user to believe a magic bunny ruled the universe, and anyone that took this pill would then become committed to giving these pills to as many people as they could such that others would also believe in the magic bunny. Sound crazy? Well, religion is that pill. Religion is a virtual drug that incites this exact form of insanity, as it has done for eons. The con of religion must be seen for what it is, the oldest and largest pyramid scheme in all of history, that only truly benefits the wallets of the priests.” From BetterHuman.org, Inc.

While I fully agree with the con of man-made religions, the author of BetterHuman goes on to “prove” the impossibility of a god in our universe. He has missed the core concept: that we are all God. The Mass Consciousness is God.

Stages of Social Development

Clare W. Graves (December 21, 1914–January 3, 1986) was a professor of psychology and originator of a Level Theory of Human Development. He developed The Eight Stages of Social Development in an attempt to explain how cultures emerge. The 8 stages are shown below, and below the table is a link to an article explaining each stage in detail.

My Beliefs

My principles, ideologies and beliefs have changed over the years. This used to concern me. How could I change core beliefs? This would mean acknowledging that something I firmly believed in previously was now wrong. For years I resisted changing my beliefs. It was comforting to find a belief system and wallow in it’s welcoming wooliness.

In late 2006 I stumbled across a tiny bookstore in Bangkok called Aporia Books at 131 Tanao Road (road that runs at ‘T’ junction with Khaosan Road. The eclectic range of books is superb, and I’ve been back many times since.

Anyhow, it was there that I first stumbled across Ken Wilber. After reading many of his books, I can now accept that changing beliefs is part of the process of human development. Using Graves’ terminology, I am now at Stage 7: the Yellow, or Integrative Stage. But let’s see what that means…

What is Truth?

Most people understand truth as representational truth, meaning a statement can only be classified as true or false if it refers to or represents something in the concrete world.

Example: “It is raining outside”. This can be checked by going outside to verify whether it is indeed raining. When aspects can easily be seen, we tie our statements to the objects, processes or affairs. This is also called the Correspondence Theory of Truth and relies on empirical representation.

The more complex approach to truth includes subjective truthfulness.

Example: “I am happy”. There is no way of checking the accuracy of this statement without entering into further discussion, since we are assessing a topic which is not represented in the concrete world (or isn’t backed by a Law of Nature).

The difficulty with subjective truthfulness is that not only might I be lying to you, I could also be lying to myself, often without being aware of it myself. In our simplistic example, I could honestly tell you that I am happy (so I am being true to you), but I’ve not admitted to myself that I am not happy (so I am not being true to myself). Is my statement thus true or false?

The amazing fact is that truth alone will not set one free. Only truthfulness will set one free.

Filters Obscure Reality

Through education systems, the media, our individual background, our cultural background, our social institutions, our parents and peers, we have been culturally conditioned into adopting a web of opinions through which we interpret reality. We only see what the web of our opinions allows us to see. It obscures the true nature of life like a veil, giving us the illusion that we know who we are and what life is all about.

It may be comfortable to live in the false security of this consensus pseudo-reality, as the majority do, but we pay a high price. We stop feeling really alive, and we believe that our filters are the only correct filters. We start believing in absolutes, instead of embracing the never-ending journey of reducing filters.

An example: Some non-human cultures can be very sophisticated. Wolves, for example, although beasts, can hunt and coordinate in packs through a very sophisticated emotional signal system. They share an intricate emotional worldspace.

Yet anything outside that world system is not registered. You could read the Bible to them, but no luck. What you are, with that book, is basically dinner plus a few bits that will have to be spat out.

The point is that we humans respond, and can respond, only to stimuli that fall within our worldspace, our worldview. Everything else is non-existent - often spat out and discarded.

Since no human can possibly gain all knowledge, our filters always discard information that would be useful/meaningful at a higher level of consciousness. Truly enlightened individuals understand that the removal of filters is an infinite task: the more filters that are removed, the more filters the individual becomes aware of.

This is the Conundrum of Enlightenment.
